Career Highlights
Bob is a seasoned and experienced civil litigator, trial lawyer and appellate advocate with over 25 years of experience defending civil lawsuits. After practicing as a management-level partner at two major civil defense firms, Bob joined ATWF to dedicate and primarily focus his professional practice on the defense of healthcare providers, hospitals, clinics and other related institutions. Bob is licensed to practice in all state and federal courts in Ohio and Kentucky.
Bob has extensive experience with all facets of civil litigation, including pre-suit investigation, administrative/licensure proceedings, discovery, motion practice, arbitration/mediation, trials and appeals. As lead counsel, Bob has resolved to conclusion well over 1,000 matters in his career, often involving multi-party actions, complex issues, claims for wrongful death and catastrophic damages.
Although Bob has defended medical negligence claims since his very first years in practice, he also has significant experience defending a diverse mix of product liability, construction defect and general tort/negligence cases over his career. In addition, Bob also has a long and successful track record defending specialized, complex and sophisticated claims brought against a variety of non-medical professionals, including accountants, lawyers, architects, engineers, real estate and various other licensed professionals. Bob has had the privilege to represent companies of all sizes, to include some of the largest corporate institutions in the world.
Perhaps most importantly and significantly, Bob is a seasoned and talented first chair trial lawyer. After excelling on his law school’s national trial advocacy team, Bob had the opportunity to begin trying cases in his first few years of practice, including several catastrophic medical negligence cases. During that time, Bob also served as a volunteer adjunct professor / coach of the regional and national trial advocacy teams for a local law school, teaching and training law students the nuances and skills needed to successfully present cases to juries. Since then, Bob has tried numerous cases to final verdict including several cases involving claims for wrongful death and other catastrophic damages. Bob has an accomplished trial “win rate.” Bob’s reputation as a lawyer who will take a case to trial often serves to the benefit of his client in resolving a case on the client’s preferred terms and conditions. Bob has tried cases to juries in state and federal courts in both Ohio and Kentucky.
Not only is Bob a skilled litigator & trial lawyer, but he is also a creative negotiator having successfully mediated and resolved hundreds of cases in state and federal courts. Bob also has experience serving as a private mediator. In addition, as part and parcel of his active trial practice, Bob is also a talented brief writer with a long track record of winning cases through dispositive motion and preserving those wins on appeal. In that regard, Bob has served as lead appellate counsel in countless meritorious and reported matters decided by various state & federal appellate courts. Bob has had the unique opportunity to brief and argue multiple matters before the Ohio Supreme Court as well numerous cases briefed and argued before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Unlike many civil litigators, Bob has regularly practiced, and tried cases, in federal court. Bob has unique and specialized prior experience defending medical negligence and deliberate indifference claims brought in federal court by pre-trial detainees/inmates against jail medical staff under 42 U.S.C. 1983.
Outside of the courtroom, Bob has always been involved in various professional organizations and has received various honors and recognitions over his career. He has been recognized for many years as a leading lawyer by Cincy magazine, has been regularly recognized by The Best Lawyers in America® in addition to various other accolades. Bob also has years of experience mentoring young lawyers and serving in various leadership roles related to law firm management and various practice groups. Bob is a 2009 graduate of the prestigious Cincinnati Academy of Leadership for Lawyers and remains active in that organization. Bob lives in Mariemont, OH with his wife of 20 years, two adored children and their beloved pets. When time permits, Bob loves to golf, exercise, travel and has a variety of other hobbies and interests outside of his day-to-day law practice.”
